This is Why We Started a Music Blog (and here’s a FREE MP3!)

For the simple reason that there is just way too much to do tonight in Dallas. Plus, you barely have to drive anywhere. I live next door to the Granada, but it’s a short drive or bike ride to Zubar and Pussycat Lounge , which are located right next to one another on Greenville Avenue at Prospect. They are separated by Public House. (And The PCL used to be the Gezellig, if that helps.)

What to See Today: Tuesday, July 20, 2010

1. COLAB at ZUBAR

The roommate and I are Zubar regs on Tuesdays. Usually we go to The Libertine Bar for half price food (I usually get a meditteranean plate and a cup of tomato basil soup) and head across the street for live funk/hip hop/jam music that always gets my toes tapping.  CoLab (short for “collaboration”) often has 10+ people on stage if they can all fit: There’s wicked guitar, keyboards, percussion, drums, trumpets, clarinets, and sometimes a flute. The vocals are honest, soulful, witty and often packed with little tidbits of advice from MC Al Lyric.

Tuesdays are so  much fun at Zubar. The patio’s great, the company’s great, and the music goes ’til late. It’s always free too. AND CoLab plays every first Friday of the month at The Green Elephant. There’s a much bigger stage, so there’s a much bigger band.

And it’s always a party.

3. w i Z a r d at the Pussycat Lounge, 10:30 p.m.

If you like raw, rageable DJ sets, and don’t want to wait for some sweet DJs to come to Dallas (Mimosa, Michael Menert, Big Gigantic, anyone?), then the PCL Dallas on Tuesday evenings may be a the beginning of a new weekly tradition. Good womps, live drums and delicious $3 drink specials. Hellooo, PCL.

*FREE DOWNLOAD: rough mix of w i Z a r d‘s track “Electric Curry,” an Eastern-influenced dub track:  It’s tight.

3. 22nd annual Dallas Observer Music Awards, 8 p.m.

The nominees will all be at the Granada – Ishi, Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights, Sarah Jaffe, Dem Southernfolkz, Emotion Brown, Dear Human…

Plus, some nominees – like RTB2 – will be playing LIVE. For FREE.
